Q & A: Coastal Drive in the Northwest

Question: Alex Sands asks:  We are driving from Bellingham, WA  to San Francisco in April.  I'd like to take the coastal route as much as possible without the trip taking FOREVER on those windy, two lane roads. We're hoping to camp along the way in out-of-the way spots with breathtaking views...any ideas?

Answer: AAA Washington's Jeff Howe answers: Hello Alex! Thank you for writing in. Your drive is one of the best in the country, in my opinion. However, there are some things you need to keep in mind if you are going in April. As you know, weather up here can be quite variable. If there is heavy cloud cover, ocean views may be difficult.

However, approximately 50 percent of the route of US-101 in Oregon is within sight of the ocean. One suggestion is to take the Three Capes Loop (from Tillamook to Pacific City). It hugs the shore, while 101 swings inland. Keep in mind that long stretches of Highway 101 do not actually touch the ocean; it runs slightly inland, often separated from the water by a tree line. Yes, taking that route will require a longer drive, but it is quite beautiful. A part of 101 between Port Orford and the California border is nice--often called Oregon's "Banana Belt." As for camping, you might want to look at the area around Rockaway Beach and Garibaldi. The Oregon Dunes is another good camping area. Also, Lincoln City and south to Yachats has a lot of state parks, many of them on or near the beach.

After you enter your starting point and destination, you can 'drag' the route shown to customize your trip and see the resulting mileage and trip time. My husband and I flew out to SanFrancisco and drove up the coast of
California into Oregon. At first we we're going to stay in Bed &
Breakfast type accommodations, but we made a pit stop at a Target
in Napa Valley (wine country) and decided to camp our way up the coast.
After buying a tent, 2 sleeping bags, a lantern and a few other
camping necessities we we're on our way. We didn't get to far (can't
drink wine and drive) so we found our first campground real close
by. Booth-Napa State Park. Nice Place. The second campground was
great. Westport Beach Rv and campground, located between Rockport and Ft. Braggs right on the beach. Absolutely beautiful. The next
day we drove to Gold Beach, Oregon and stayed at a campground
called Indian Creek Recreational Park very close to the Rogue
River. I'm not sure if it is too early in the year for you, but
we took a trip on Jerry's Rogue Jets. What a beautiful boat trip.
If you get a chance, stop along the way and take a picture of
the beach at Whaleshead Rocks Rocky Shore, it's absolutely beau-
tiful. Also, stop in Crescent City, CA and take a picture of the
Crescent City Lighthouse, so much history. Well, I could go on
and on but you have to see it for yourself. Have fun, it's beautiful
out there.
