Q&A: Best Time to Visit Scotland

Submitted by Community Manager, March 9, 2009
AAA Essential Scotland
Question: Debra Schein asks: What is the best time to visit Scotland?

Answer: R Sastri, who lived in Scotland for a while, answers: May and June are good months to visit, both from a weather standpoint and the fact that schools in Britain are in session until early July. If you would like to catch the Edinburgh International Festival, visit in the last two weeks of August and the first week in September. Opera, dance, theater and music are performed in a variety of venues across the city. Do make sure you make your reservations well in advance if you plan your trip around this festival.

Excellent information about these tourist attractions are included in the AAA Essential Scotland guide available at barnesandnoble.com. AAA members can get a discount on the guide at AAA.com/barnesandnoble (you'll need your AAA membership number to access the Barnes & Noble section of AAA.com).

Have a wonderful time and comment on my answer when you return from your trip to give our readers more recommendations.

Check the dates for the "Tatoo" in Edinburgh. We went a few years ago, and it was a highlight - terrific show! I think it's on mid-July to mid-august, but you need find out dates for future trips.

The Ardverikie Estate is indeed beautiful. May and June are good times to visit both from a weather standpoint and the fact that schools in Britain are in session until early July. You can then take advantage of the great hiking opportunities around the area. If you’d prefer the romance of winter, January and February are your best bet. Peak travel, or “high” seasons are May and June so make your reservations early if you plan to go at that time. You can check out more of the estate at www.ardverikie.com
