A Flatter Route Between Las Vegas and Kanab, Utah?

Submitted by Community Manager, April 15, 2009
Kenab, Utah
Question: Anne McKenna asks: I am planning a second trip to Kanab, Utah. On my first trip I flew to Las Vegas and drove from there. The drive east to Kanab was fine, but I did not enjoy the steep descent into Hurricane on the return trip. Can I get to Kanab via another airport such as Salt Lake City? A longer drive on a flatter route would be fine.

Answer: Lenora Folk, travel planner at the AAA office in St. George, Utah, answers: If you fly into Las Vegas, take I-15 north toward Hurricane, Utah. A portion of this route from exit 112 in Nevada to Hurricane is a AAA-designated scenic byway with many photo opportunities of the area’s natural beauty. In Hurricane, turn right on Main Street, and then immediately left on 100 South Street which is SR-59. Follow this road into Arizona, where it becomes SR-389. Stop at Pipe Spring National Monument enroute. Be sure to see the cultural exhibits at the Visitor Center and tour the fort if you have time.

Continue to Fredonia, Ariz., where a left turn onto northbound US-89 Alternate will take you seven miles straight into Kanab. This is a flatter route than SR-9, which goes through Zion National Park. This route does go through Hildale and Colorado City, the locations made infamous by Warren Jeffs and his underage polygamous communities. I suggest that you don’t stop there - keep driving!

Another alternative would be to fly into a closer airport - Page, Arizona - which would result in a gentle, shorter drive but almost certainly a more expensive flight. Although it’s an easy 75-mile drive on northbound US-89 to Kanab, the carrier that serves the Page airport tends to use small turbo prop aircraft.

Visit or call your local AAA office to make your final travel plans. You can plan your route to Kanab using TripTik Travel Planner. Be sure to use the drag-and-drop feature to modify the route to take SR-59 at Hurricane.
In 1988, AAA became actively involved in a national scenic byway initiative that eventually led to the introduction of the Scenic Byways Study Act of 1989. Today, the AAA Scenic Byways program includes over 650 byways in four distinct categories – traditional, cultural heritage, historic, and natural beauty. Byways are shown on AAA state and provincial maps, city maps, and TripTik Travel Planner on AAA.com.

We are planning a trip to Kanab via Las Vegas in September. Neither my girlfriend or myself enjoys driving through the mountains or on very twisty roads. Is this going to be a problem? Can someone elaborate about the "steep decline into Hurricane on the return trip". How did you avoid the assent on the initial trip?
Any information about the drive between LV and Kanab would be very helpful to us. We are AAA members, and I am thinking now that I will contact them before we go.

Hi Jeremie,
This is a beautiful drive that is done with enjoyment by many visitors each year for the scenic beauty. That said, it is difficult to predict your comfort level, as that is an individual thing, The route is a 2-lane road, it does twist and turn and does ascend and descend. (We don’t believe the poster in the previous question ‘avoided’ the ascent, but it is very common for people to be more comfortable with an ascent than a descent as you are not riding the brakes as much)

We encourage you to get maps from your AAA local office or online from AAA.com. You may also want to check other travel forums like this one.

What is the drive like between Page AZ and Kanab UT.
We are thinking that we may fly into Page AZ as opposed to Las Vegas. Any thoughts on flying on Great Lakes Aviation between Phoenix and Page would be helpful also.

Thanks

As noted above, it's an easy 75-mile drive, winding and scenic. We don't have any personal experience with the Great Lakes Aviation, but do check flygreatlakes.com for more information.
