When Diamond Ratings Are Questioned

Submitted by Community Manager, May 7, 2009

Question: Been a member since 1956 and then some. Have had great vacations aided by AAA services. Recent years have made me question the quality of the travel accommodation books in that the accommodations that carry the 3 and 4 "star" ratings are in our recent travels no better than a 2 in many cases. Either AAA is not inspecting with the standards of old, not inspecting regularly, or whatever. Don't know, but frustrating when committing to a substandard motel that has a high AAA rating. Also, some restaurants listed in books have been out of business for 4 years!!! What gives?? Thanks.

Answer: Michael Petrone, director of tourism information development, says: Thank you for visiting the AAA TravelViews blog and submitting your comment. It’s wonderful that you have been a member since 1956 and have enjoyed great vacations with the help of AAA services. I hope I can effectively address your current concerns.

AAA’s full-time inspectors work on a yearly cycle that starts anew as each annual TourBook guide is completed. Most properties maintain consistent service levels throughout the year-long life of each TourBook guide, but sometimes changes (including closures) do occur. When AAA finds out about a change or closure after the guide is printed, we modify the property’s listing on AAA.com immediately. The change is noted in our database and is reflected in the next annual edition of the printed guide. For this reason, it’s important to make sure you use the most recent version of the TourBook guide when you are planning a trip. Couple the newest printed guide with AAA.com information and you’ll have the best of both worlds.

We are proud of our Diamond Rating System and the properties that meet our requirements to be AAA Approved and Diamond Rated. We provide the rating service for our members; therefore, our members’ experiences at the establishments are important. If your experience at a AAA Approved establishment does not meet your expectations, we hope you will tell us so we have an opportunity to make corrections and changes and, when appropriate, seek resolution. Members may submit their comments through local AAA club offices or using the online form at AAA.com/TourBookComments. Comments are addressed individually and members are contacted directly by a AAA Member Relations representative for any follow-up information needed.

AAA works closely with industry representatives and members to align the Diamond Rating guidelines with current practices and expectations, periodically updating these as needed. For a definition of each Diamond Rating level for lodgings and restaurants, please refer to P. 20-21 in any current TourBook guide or visit AAA.com/Diamonds. After you review the information, please let us know if you have questions or comments. You may submit these using the online form mentioned above, or through the Q&A section of the AAA TravelViews blog.

I have been a member for 49 years.
In the past, I could always depend on your guide book to find a clean hotel.
Not so in the last two years.
I now have to rely on the reviews for each individual hotel posted on the website.
Very disappointed in you.

Last weekend I stopped at the Economy Inn in Somerset, PA. I saw the Triple A logo over the brightly lit motel, with a sign that advertised "squeaky clean rooms". I was pleasantly surprised. The motel lobby had several beautiful little fountains with flora, the staff was friendly. The room I had was large and cozy. Their were multiple amenities included for a reasonable price. The rooms were all on one level, with potted flowers outside each door in a shared corridor. The room was truly "squeaky clean". There was the usual Bible, but also other literature of interest to a variety of travelers -- such as a book written by Mary B. Eddy, based on the Scriptures and The Women's Journals, a local newspaper serving area women. I ended my stay by taking advantage of the free, excellent breakfast that was included. I would highly recommend this motel to fellow travelers.

I recently stayed at the Comfort Inn in Pittsfield, Mass. and was sorely dissappointed in the quality of the inn. Not a two diamond! It was dirty, old, and in desparate need of remodeling. They required a 72 hour notice of cancellation, so when you arrive your stuck with a nights stay in a run down dirty motel! I honestly believe this motel does not qualify for even a one diamond. I'm also contacting the Comfort Inn corporate headquarters to alert them as to the condition of the inn.

Recently stayed at the Fairfield Inn & Suites Allentown Bethlehem/Route 22 motel. I question the 3 diamonds that it received because we were given an end room very close to busy Route 22 (trucks and cars all night) and we could not sleep in spite of offered earplugs from front desk. We asked for another room but were told they were fully booked. I believe some of these rooms are too close to a very busy thoroughfare and it should be noted in the Tour Book. I must add though that the staff were very pleasant and room were clean.

Regina- Thank you for bringing this to our attention. I am sharing your information with our member relations staff who monitor and respond to AAA member comments, so you can expect a response shortly.

AAA Diamond Ratings represent a combination of the overall quality, the range of facilities and the level of service offered by a property. All AAA Diamond Rated properties undergo an onsite inspection yearly− part of which is a stringent assessment of housekeeping and maintenance conditions evident at that time. During the inspection, a cross-section is taken from the property, which may not reflect every room within the facility.

A friend and I stayed at The Circle Court Motel in Ticonderoga NY on 8/24/11. We found it seedy, dirty rugs,a dead bug on the wall. The mattress cover on my friend's bed was very badly stained. We chose the motel because it was in the AAA TourBook. When was the last time someone from AAA visited the place to continue giving it your seal of approval ? I would appreciate a prompt response. Thank you Elaine O'Regan
