Paris, France
Last month, AAATravelViews received a very special question from our Q&A page. Matthew Stovall wrote:I'm traveling to Strasbourg, France in two weeks and plan to propose to my girlfriend. I am looking for some help/advice on the most romantic spots in the city---where is the most memorable and intimate setting?? Preferably outdoors enjoying the lovely weather and ambiance of the city!
Matthew was emailed the following answer: Thank you for visiting AAATravelViews and for your intriguing question. We certainly had fun researching the answer and have a variety of options for you. Clare G. at the AA, our counterpart in the UK recommends:
Parc de l'Orangerie - a beautiful park with a boating lake and a pavilion built for Napoleon's wife. This is our top pick here with the TravelViews team as well.
Maison Kammerzell is one of the most beautiful houses in the city built in the 15th and 16th centuries. There is a restaurant on the upper floors.
The tower of the astronomical clock in Place de la Cathedrale has a viewing platform at the top. This may prove to be a bit crowded for your needs, depending on the time.
Chrystele L., our AAA French native, recommends Quai de la Petit France, a picturesque neighborhood for Strasbourg, with romantic half-timbered houses and balconies full of flowers. The streets are dotted with small bistros and cafés that may be the right outdoor venue you wanted.
The
AAA Spiral France recommends a boat trip on the river Ill. Bateaux mouche leave from near the Palais Rohan, and tours last around an hour.
If it’s a weekday, you might find the botanic garden on rue Goethe a tranquil place to pop the question. Access is free and in June the park is generally open from 8-8 during the week and from 10-6 on the weekends. In terms of timing, many of the buildings are constructed of pale stone that looks particularly spectacular at sunset.
P.S. Do come back and tell us how it goes. We’ll give it a month or so before we post the Q&A to the blog just so we don’t spoil your surprise.
The AAATravelViews staff was delighted to just receive this email:
Thank you so very much for your advice on the most romantic places in Strasbourg, France! The trip was gorgeous, memorable, and exciting. I had the opportunity to visit all the places you mentioned and found that each one would have provided an amazing and truly special environment for the big question! In the end, I found that the paths along the Ill River in Petite France served me best. After a romantic evening on the river, we went for a walk and grabbed a bench just out of reach from the lights of the bustling cafes. After three attempts at asking her to marry me in French without much understanding, Megan said yes and was thrilled. We're looking forward to a fall wedding next year. Thanks for all your help and suggestions, it provided us with a very special engagement! Attached is a picture of the newly engaged couple!!
Best wishes,
Matthew
Best wishes to both of you from AAATravelViews. And, if you need honeymoon trip planning advice, we're here!
