Benziger Winery, Glen Ellen, California
The rolling hills and lush vineyards of Sonoma Valley are stunningly beautiful. And the first-rate wines produced in this region are nothing short of sublime. I wanted to learn more about viticulture and how Wine Country farmers coaxed their magical concoctions from this rich soil. So, I decided to take a behind-the-scenes peek by embarking on a winery tour—
Benziger Family Vineyards seemed a logical choice, since it was close to my lunch stop in pretty Glen Ellen.
Benziger’s grounds are gorgeous, adorned with vibrant sunflowers and fragrant roses. An area with several tables provides a stellar spot for picnickers, a tranquil setting from which to appreciate a lovely panorama of the sprawling property. (You’re welcome to pack your own meal or purchase something in their market.) You might spy a wild turkey hobbling along or observe the resident cows, sheep and friendly farm dogs.
Forty-five minute tram tours are conducted daily on the half-hour from 11-3:30.

In addition to being a winery that supports many “green,” or environmentally friendly initiatives, Benziger practices biodynamic and organic farming. Our enthusiastic guide explained these terms in detail during our tram ride through the vineyards, but bottom line, Mother Nature does the work instead of chemicals. For example, the winery releases “good” bugs on the property that prey on insects that are likely to munch on the vines. In addition to protecting the environment, these methods result in grapes that are more flavorful and intense.

The tram eventually arrived at the chilly underground barrel caves, where we enjoyed an explanation of the barreling process. Here, we were offered two tastings,

and then ventured outside to observe the steel fermentation tanks. Afterward, we were invited into the winery’s tasting room to sample two more wines. For a fee, you can opt to taste additional offerings, such as biodynamic or reserve products.
I would recommend that anyone planning to visit Wine Country who is interested in taking a vineyard tour sign on for this one. I learned something about organic farming practices and winemaking, and best of all, got to taste great wines in a peaceful pastoral setting.
