TKTS in Times Square
Question: Darrell asks: I am going to New York and would like to see a Broadway show. I can order tickets online but I have heard that before the show starts there is a period of time when they sell cheap tickets. Can you tell me anything about that?
Answer: Yes, discount Broadway theater tickets are available at the
TKTS booths in New York City, and there are three locations. The Times Square booth sells day-of-performance tickets only, the South Street Seaport booth sells tickets to evening performances on the day of the performance, and matinee tickets the day before. The downtown Brooklyn booth sells tickets to evening performances on the day of the performance, and matinee tickets the day before as well tickets to Brooklyn performing arts events. Go to the
TKTS website for

more information on hours, policies and helpful tips.
The
booth in Times Square is an attraction itself – it’s topped with 27 ruby-red glass steps and climbing to the top (which you can do until 1 a.m.) gives you both a great view and photo opportunity of the dazzling lights at the intersection of Broadway and Seventh Avenue.

I’ve gotten tickets this way quite a few times – I remember the old Times Square ‘island’ booth (I froze out there waiting during my winter visits) and the temporary one next to the Marriott Marquis. My experiences have been good because I didn’t have expectation of getting the ‘hottest’ ticket, I was happy to see a show that had been playing for while for half the usual $100+ ticket price. Yes, for the best selection you need to get there at least a couple of hours before the windows open, but hey, you’re in New York City – even waiting in line is fun.

Note, however, that popular shows – especially musicals or ‘family’ shows - are very difficult to get this way. If you have your heart set on a particular show, advance purchase may be your best option.
Another thought is go to
Playbill.com,
BroadwayBox.com or
TheaterMania.com and see what’s available in advance with a discount. Be cautious about buying from individuals either online or on the street in New York City – the tickets might not be legitimate. For more New York tips, check out our
