The National Cathedral, Mexico City
Happy Birthday Mexico!
Mexico is currently gearing up for the party of a century -- make that two centuries. Preparations are underway to
celebrate the centennial anniversary of the Mexican revolution (1910) and the 200-year anniversary of Mexico’s independence from Spain (1810). The Zocalo, Mexico City’s main plaza since pre-Columbian time, is the epicenter of this party, which will culminate on September 16, 2010.
The Zocalo and the adjacent historic center is an awesome place to visit. You will find the palace of King Axayacatl, where Hernan Cortez was received in 1519. Mexico City’s ancient cathedral dominates

the

entire area. Wander around the Zocalo on any Sunday and you will find much of what Cortez encountered; Aztecs in feathered costumes blowing deep bellowing summons from conches, priests performing cleansing rituals with smoked filled urns, vendors offering necklaces, sandals, and religious icons---and oh, the restaurants!
Mercaderes (Ave Cinco

de Mayo #57), La Casa de Las Sirenas (Republica de Guatemala #32) and Hosteria Santo Domingo (Belisario Dominguez #7) are a few favorites, the last two in business since the mid-1800s. You will find numerous AAA approved lodgings and restaurants and museums all within walking distance of the Zocalo. Now is a great time to plan this travel back in time!
Feliz Cumpleanos Mexico!
