Amtrak From Chicago to Seattle

Amtrak's Empire Builder in Glacier National Park
 From the Q&A mailbox:
Question:  David writes: We would like to plan a train trip from Chicago to Seattle and Vancouver.

Answer:
A train trip is a wonderful way to experience the beauty of the Northwest. Amtrak has a route on the Empire Builder from Chicago to Seattle that travels daily along major portions of the Lewis & Clark trail. This route will take you through the plains of North Dakota, over the spectacular Gassman Coulee Trestle and into Big Sky country in Montana. Once you reach Seattle, Amtrak has continuing service to Vancouver on the Amtrak Cascades route.
If you do continue on to Vancouver, BC, be sure to have proper documentation with you for crossing the border and returning to the U.S. Acceptable forms of identification include the U.S. Passport Card introduced in July 2008.

Your local AAA office can help with travel plans. AAA members receive 10% off regular fares, make sure to choose the AAA options under 'passenger type' if you book online with Amtrak.

There is nothing like riding the rails. Back in 1979 -- my first summer to work in Yellowstone -- I took Amtrak from Cleveland to Livingston, Montana. It was one of my best travel experiences. I followed that with a couple of train trips between Cleveland and Denver -- each living up to the expectations of previous trips. If there is one down side to train travel in the US, it is the limited number of trains which in turn complicates travel planning. But, if you have the time, train travel is the way to go!

The 'Accessible Space' link on the Amtrak.com website provides some good information you may find useful.
