Gulf Coast Beach Updates Report

Updated September 21, 2010

The declaration by U.S. officlals that the Deepwater Horizon Oil well is considered permanently plugged was welcome news to all who have been following this months-long story. Cleanup efforts continue, and conditions are currently as follows:

Currently, the only Gulf beach closures are in Louisiana at Grand Isle State Park and Fourchon Beach in Jefferson Parish. Grand Isle’s Fort Pike State Historic Site is closed for use as an oil containment command center, however, the campground is still open. As a service to travelers, AAA has been providing information on oil-related Gulf of Mexico beach closures as designated by local and regional officials.on AAA.com's TripTik Travel Planner. An advisory icon on a TripTik Travel Planner map (as shown here) indicates an area that has been closed by authorities due to the presence of oil.

Additional detailed regional information, including advisories, is available from the following sites: U.S. Environmental Protection Agency Summary of Coastal Conditions

Is there any open road that I can take down to Venice LA?
Submitted by Laurie Peterson, June 11. 2010 14:54
There are no oil-related road closures. S.R. 39 goes from New Orleans to Venice.

When was the last time the info on beach closings was updated? And how often are you updating this info?
Submitted by Laurie Peterson, June 15. 2010 09:01
We are monitoring information sources daily and updating as new closures are announced. The above beach closure information is complete as of this writing.

Does this report also track beach advisories, or strictly beach closures? Alabama's state policy prohibits beach closures, but they do have "swim at your own risk" advisories for several beaches because of the spill.

At this time, AAA is only reporting beach closures as a service to travelers. We have not historically reported swim advisories at recreational areas, but will continue to monitor the situation.

Help the National Audubon Society’s oil spill relief efforts. Simply going to http://www.AshevilleTourismCares.com automatically donates 10 cents to the Gulf oil spill relief efforts. Click on the link once per day through July 2 to help us reach our goal of raising $10,000.
