Tips For Packing Lightly

Submitted by Renuka Sastri, November 9, 2010
Queston: Jodi asks, Do you have any tips for packing lightly? We always overpack and now we have a child to pack for too. With the cost of baggage fees these days, any advice is appreciated. Thanks!

Answer: As the AAATravelViews (under) packing expert, I've found there's a number of packing resources available on the web but I follow a very simple process. I check the weather, count the number of days we’re planning for and make a list.  For a short trip, it looks something like this:

Packing list

It gives my children a great thrill to check off what they provide to be packed and keeps things organized. Skip bringing your own shampoo, soap, or hair dryer unless you absolutely have to have them, as most hotels provide the basics and they suffice pretty well for a few days. If you forget something, you can usually buy it when you get there. I find that an extra t-shirt generally takes care of the inevitable pasta-related disaster. A few wet wipes/tissues might not hurt if you have younger children.

If you’re traveling abroad, consider taking older clothes and leaving them behind – you get more space for the stuff you buy. The children carry their books/games, etc. in a small backpack.  You can probably fit each person’s stuff neatly into a single carry-on, with lots of room left over. If I’m traveling by myself, I can usually fit everything into my trusty old backpack.

You can find a selection of good lightweight carryons at the AAA Travel Store.  If you’re flying, be sure to follow the TSA regulations and pack no more than 3 ounces of any liquids or gels.

We hope this is helpful. Readers, please offer more tips with a comment. Safe (and light) travels!

Pack clothes you can wear more than once or mix and match and wear the bulkiest items on the travel day so you don't have to put them in your suitcase (especially shoes).

I also try to pack clothes that I can mix and match - this is a great idea.. Also I try to remember that most times I wont be traveling to a developing country, and if I am not sure I am going to need something then just skip it. Like umbrellas/raingear - if it does rain I can buy or borrow something.. No need to haul that around for a 10% chance of rain!

We try to bring sweatpants and a t-shirt for nightclothes...that gives you one extra outfit if you're in a pinch! Shout wipes have also saved the outfit on more than one occasion.

'Take half as many clothes and twice as much money,' as my mother used to say. Then I saw that New York Times writer Susan Heller Anderson is credited with that line. Oh, well.

My wife and I take some old clothes that are still wearable.

Wear the old clothes and then discard them along the way.
