Christmas On The Pecos

While doing ‘inspector duty’ in Carlsbad, New Mexico,  I was encouraged by many local folks to experience Christmas on the Pecos, an event I had heard great things about but never had the opportunity to experience. A nighttime boat ride during December, you say? I am not a fan of cold weather and will do my best to avoid it, but since I was just getting into the holiday spirit I took the challenge.

The cruises depart regularly from the Pecos River Village, a riverfront park with a gift shop, artist co-op and snack bar where you can purchase hot beverages. I did my best to dress warmly for a chilly outdoor adventure. Unfortunately all I had in my travel wardrobe was business apparel, but that did include a light coat, gloves and scarf. Luckily the planners of this event are very wise and offer all riders a complimentary blanket or two to keep you warm as you board the open air pontoon boat.

Christmas On The Pecos began in 1992 when riverfront homeowners got together to decorate their homes with fantastic holiday light displays. The first boat ride held ten people, today a fleet of four boats carry up to forty riders each and travel up and down the river several times each evening. I settled in my seat, wrapped up in two blankets next to Christmas On The Pecosvisitors from Germany and got my camera ready for the 45 minute journey. Not only were the over 100 lovely homes twinkling with colorful lights, I was truly impressed by the stationary and animated scenes unfolding along the river. From a fishing Santa to an oversize margarita to trees, reindeer, nativities, boats and much more, the displays were spectacular!  I found it was difficult to snap a decent shot with gloved hands, so I just sat back and enjoyed the show. Thanks to the Carlsbad Chamber of Commerce for helping me out with photos.

This event runs from Thanksgiving weekend to New Year’s Eve and attracts visitors from all over the U.S. and abroad. Reservations are strongly suggested. Happy Holidays!

Wow, I had no idea about this diverse event in small town Carlsbad. Sounds like a beautiful experience floating on the river watching the twinkling lights. Hope you stayed cozy warm out there!
