The Queen Victoria B&B, Cape May
Here are some drive trip planning question - and answers from AAA experts.
My wife and I want to take a road trip from Medford, MA to Myrtle Beach, SC via the ocean route. Where are romantic places to stop and visit?
On your way south from Massachusetts, stop first in Cape May, New Jersey. Cape May is a quintessential seaside town with brightly colored homes and seasonally blooming gardens, magnificent beachfront inns, seafood restaurants along Fisherman's Wharf and of course the boardwalk (promenade) where you can shop, dine and pick up classic Jersey shore treats - fudge and salt water taffy. For romantic accommodations, check out Queen Victoria Bed & Breakfast, the Virginia Hotel or the Hotel Alcott. While you're there, stop by the Inn of Cape May located in the heart of the historic district. Just as guests have done for 110 years, you can take a stroll along the promenade, enjoy a rocker on the wrap-around porch with a grand view of the ocean or catch a horse-drawn carriage for a ride through town.
Also, to kick off a romantic evening, be sure to catch the spectacular sunsets at Sunset Beach.Further down on the east coast, try Barclay Cottage in Virginia Beach. Built in 1895, this award-winning B&B is nestled in an historic neighborhood just a few minutes' walk to the beach and boardwalk. This property offers a peaceful and romantic alternative to the high-rise Virginia Beach motel and hotel accommodations. Also, try The White Doe Inn Bed & Breakfast in Manteo, North Carolina. Tucked in along the shores of Shallowbag Bay, Manteo is surrounded by tranquil waters and is just minutes from Nags Head’s beautiful beaches. On any given day you can enjoy concerts, art shows, nature programs and more. For a coastal experience along the Atlantic, visit the Cape Hatteras Bed & Breakfast. This property is just a short walk to the beach as well as shops and restaurants. Here you'll also enjoy the solitude and natural beauty of the surrounding Cape Hatteras National Seashore.

We have two resources that can help you plan such a trip:
(1) AAA Drive Trips® are two- to five-day driving itineraries for popular U.S. and Canadian destinations. These ready-to-go itineraries include an overview map, estimated drive time, mileage, photos, links to information on cities, attractions and events, as well as hotel booking. Also
click here for a number of interesting blog posts on AAA Drive Trips.
(2) The AAA TripTik Travel Planner is a great tool for road trip planning. Simply zoom in and out around your home town to see what there is and plan your trip. Some tips for using the TripTik:
Yellow “i” buttons (on the map): detailed area information on each key destination.
“Travel Guides": all the detail you would find in our AAA TourBook guides, for a variety of destinations.
"View Demo" button (above right corner of map): shows a full demonstration of how to use the TripTik.
"Show tab" (
above map): helps customize what you see on the map – from attractions and events to hotels you can book right from the maps.
Modify route: plan your trip in the left menu bar then modify your route by simply moving the highlighted route onto other roads.
