Going Overseas Q&A

Submitted by Community Manager, March 15, 2011
Questions about Malaysia, Europe, Puerto Rico and more - and the answers from our AAA experts.

Is my Washington drivers license all that's needed to drive in Malaysia?
No, you will also need an International Driving Permit, which is essentially a translation of your U.S. license for Malaysia. AAA offices issue these. Please see our blog post on this subject for more information.

We booked a Carnival cruise out of San Juan, PR. We arrive the day before so need to find a hotel (with restaurant) near the port (we understand cab fares in San Juan are expensive). Any ideas?
Carnival docks right across the street from the Sheraton Old San Juan (Three Diamond rated). There are other hotels in Old San Juan such as the Four Diamond Hotel El Convento, but you should search at AAA.com/travel to see rates and availability - you could look at hotels in the Condado Beach area if needed, a few minutes more by cab might be offset by a better hotel rate or availability.

I would like to visit Ireland but my husband does not want to leave the country. Where could we travel in the U.S. that is similar to Ireland as far as scenery and pubs?
It is difficult to come up with an area in the U.S. that resembles the scenery of Ireland, the green, the villages, etc. Parts of Oregon and Washington State may have a bit of that, or the Amish part of Pennsylvania or parts of New England in summer? It’s probably best to want to visit a destination based on its attributes, rather than its resemblance to somewhere else. If you are interested in Irish cultural events, click here for a list of festivals. Boston has a big Irish connection and the landmarks and pubs to match. There’s even a Boston Irish tourism web site or see our Boston Travel Guide for more information.

I am considering flying to London, taking the train to Paris and buying a France/Italy Eurail pass. My research on the France/Italy pass says it is for 30 days - can it be extended to 2 months?
The France-Italy pass is available for 2 months, travel can be used on 4-10 days within these 2 months, click here for the information, though you may have to choose a different age range. This 2 country pass along with a separate Eurostar ticket from London-Paris is a good option for you. In addition, if you are a AAA member and purchase the Eurail ticket through AAA you receive complimentary protection from theft/loss. Please contact your local club for details.

Can we use our AAA card to pick up a map for driving in the UK?
Your local AAA club has guidebooks for the UK available for sale and the AA (a UK auto club) offers some services at a discount to AAA members but the complimentary maps for AAA members are just for the U.S. and Canada, as is our online TripTik Travel Planner.
