Luggage and packing Q&A - and the answers by our AAA experts.
I heard that there was an excellent AAA video on how to pack one carry-on for almost any trip but I can't find it online. Is it available to watch?
You can watch the packing demonstration by Automobile Club of Southern California travel writers Elizabeth Harryman and Paul Lasley
here.
What EXACTLY can you put in your carry-on luggage? We need to find out if you can take a curling iron/hot rollers and how much shampoo/cream rinse/lotion and make-up?
Please see the
TSA’s website for complete information, guidelines and restrictions. Also, you might enjoy our blog post
Tips For Packing Lightly.
I am flying to Orlando and want to know the guidelines for what I can pack in my checked luggage. What size bags do I use to store my shampoo etc. and what size the bottles should I use?
The restrictions on liquids like shampoo apply to carry-on luggage
NOT checked luggage. The
TSA has lots of pre-planning information to make sure travelers are prepared when they arrive at the airport - check out the
What to Know Before You Go section on the right.
AAA has us booked on a Delta Canadair 200 "Regional" aircraft. Delta says the small 50-person plane has "smaller" overhead bins for carry-ons, but cannot tell me if my CrewGear bag (20x14x8 inches) will stow OK. Any data?
We spoke with Delta and their policy is that the carry-on baggage size is 22x14x9 inches no matter what the size of the overhead bin is. If it turns out that you bag does not fit in the smaller bin (or underneath the seat in front of you) then the cabin crew will take whatever action is necessary. This may lead to your luggage being put in the hold at no cost. If you need to speak with them please call 1-800-221-1212.
Is soft-sided luggage (duffel bag style) suitable for international travel or is hard-sided/formed a better choice? We'll be using a TSA luggage lock.
While you can use a soft-side duffle, upright wheeled hard-side luggage is always best for international travel. It is more durable, easy to maneuver and can be just as lightweight as a duffle. Checked baggage for international flights have weight limits though, so be sure to check your airline’s website to avoid paying extra fees for overweight luggage.
I have not flown in over 30 years, but I have heard that there are a lot of restrictions and it can be a big hassle. Is there a list of airline do's and dont's that can be emailed to me?
Flying has changed a great deal in the past 30 years, however, if you are prepared, have the correct documentation/identification and give yourself enough time, you should be able to travel hassle-free. First of all, see the
TSA site for pre-planning information to make sure you are prepared before you arrive at the airport. Second, since security checks - including removing your shoes - take time, make sure that you allow plenty of time. Finally, as for baggage, the airlines all have different restrictions on the amount that you can take, and many charge for checked bags, so please check this out when you book your flight. Also, when booking please take care to ensure that your name on your ticket (and thus your boarding pass) exactly matches your ID.
