NEW ! Please see the I-29 Road Closure - Inspector Recommended Detours post for 3 suggested detours for I-29.

We have had many questions on the recent Mississippi flooding. Here is one such question and the response from our AAA expert who offers general advice for weather-related road conditions.

What is the best alternative to I-29 from Omaha to Kansas City, with the probable closing due to flood? I would like the shortest travel time. Is the "planned route" best, or would we be better off if we stay on the west side of the river?

We generally advise that travelers take the recommended detour route provided by the Department of Transport (DOT). Here are some additional resources to help you with your planning:

TripTik Travel Planner:
Click here to see the regular route in TripTik Travel Planner. To compare options ‘drag’ the highlighted route to alternate roads and see the recalculated distance and travel time.

DOT web sites: We find that DOT web sites offer the best information on the latest road conditions for weather-related situations, rockslides etc. Here are links to some DOT web sites with information related to the recent flooding:
   - Iowa DOT click here
   - Missouri DOT click here
   - Arkansas DOT click here
   - Kentucky DOT click here
   - Illinois DOT click here
   - Mississippi DOT click here
   - Tennessee DOT click here

Just before you leave: Since weather and road conditions can change rapidly we advise checking such sites immediately before departure.

When you're on the road: call 511 for updates.

It never ceases to amaze me how our members' rely so much on our
expertise. with the internet, news media and other sources of "up-to-date- information, our members, ( and non-members) still want
the reassurance of AAA's human imput and direction when travel challenges arise.

I myself have answered similar questions during the spring floods with the same confident, guiding response for our members.
good counseling skills, customer service and genuine care never fails. good job..
