Aulani, a Disney Resort & Spa

While staying at the J.W. Marriott Ihilani, a AAA Four Diamond resort on the island of Oahu, I previewed the exterior of Aulani, a Disney Resort & Spa, scheduled to open Aug. 29, 2011. The two properties share a beautiful golden sand beach lagoon that is, at present, quiet, uncrowded and idyllic — and undoubtedly about to change. About 30 minutes west of Honolulu International Airport and an hour from Waikiki, the location is convenient for exploring the west (leeward) side of the Oahu unless you want the action of Waikiki.

Aulani means “the place that speaks for the great ones” or “the place that speaks with deep messages.” The locals are grateful to have some 1,200 jobs created and an easier commute than Waikiki but, initially, some were skeptical about the authenticity of the Hawaiian cultural expression. The focus is the story of Hawaii, but there’s no doubt Disney magic will be a part of the experience (Mickey Mouse promises to make appearances).

Striking tower complexes, nearing completion, feature soaring roofs with Hawaiian designs. The accommodations, perfect for families, range from deluxe studios to one-, two- and three-bedroom guest rooms offering fully equipped kitchens. Artists’ renderings illustrate a contemporary village design with a river running through a volcano outcropping. The lobby will feature Hawaiian artwork, murals and lava rock rising up through the floor. Tropical gardens, lagoons and waterfalls will abound.

Activities will include a storytelling fire pit, a Waikolohe Stream tube ride, Rainbow Reef (man-made lagoon) snorkeling, conservation pool encounters with the gentle stingray and, for the younger set, the Menehune Bridge & Trail. Kid can play at Aunty’s Beach House while parents go and enjoy themselves, and there will be a family friendly spa. The resort will also offer Disney entertainment and character dining.
