Do you ever wonder what happens to all the lost baggage at airports? Recently I found the answer. Way up in the northeast corner of Alabama is a small town called Scottsboro. There I found a large retail outlet that sells the items from unclaimed baggage. In fact, the name of the store is Unclaimed Baggage Center.
Looking at the items that were on sale, it amazed me the things people packed in their luggage. In addition to the abundance of clothing, shoes and books.
I saw some beautiful evening wear but was aghast when I noticed the numerous wedding dresses mixed in– my heart went out to those brides who must have gone without their dream gown on their special day.
I was perplexed to see cases full of fine jewelry. Who in their right mind packs their jewels in bags that will be checked in? I always pack mine (the few I own) in my carry-on bag. I did benefit from someone’s loss as I purchased a stunning sapphire pinky ring at a real bargain (I’ve got to treat myself once in a while).
There was also sports equipment of all sizes, cameras, toys, souvenirs, linens and even small household appliances. I don’t even own luggage big enough to fit some of the things at the center. It’s unbelievable the types of things people can’t leave home without.
More information can be found on the
Unclaimed Baggage Center’s website, which highlights some of the most unusual and amusing items the store has received. The objects range from a full suit of armor to a live rattlesnake (I’m sure glad I wasn’t the one opening that bag).
If you ever make it out to that region, be sure to visit the store, as you never know what treasures you might find. Some may even be your own.
