Halloween trick-or-treating
Did you know that Halloween trick-or-treating can be traced back to the Middle Ages? Although the tradition has changed over time, the idea of giving out candy has remained the same.

ALABAMA
Oct. 29 MCCALLA Halloween Celebration—Train rides, storytelling and children's activities are offered. Location: Tannehill Ironworks Historical State Park. Contact: (205) 477-5711. $.

CALIFORNIA
Oct. 1-30 SAN DIEGO (Sat.-Sun. only) Halloween Spooktacular at SeaWorld—This family-oriented program features trick- or-treating stations, Halloween-themed shows and undersea characters in Halloween costumes wandering through the park. Location: SeaWorld. Contact: (800) 380-

DELAWARE
Oct. 29 WILMINGTON Boo At The Zoo—The whole family will enjoy games, face painting, entertainment, and live animal presentations. Children are welcome to wear Halloween costumes. Location: Brandywine Zoo. Contact: (302) 571-7788. $.

FLORIDA
Oct. 8-30 ORLANDO (Sat.-Sun. only) SeaWorld's Halloween Spooktacular—On select days, costumed characters haunt the park as children participate in Halloween- themed activities and entertainment. Location: SeaWorld Orlando. Contact: (407)363-2259. $.

ILLINOIS
Oct. 28-30 CHICAGO Chicagoween—Halloween is more than a day in Chicago: It is an entire season. The city, its parks, buildings and streets, are decorated and filled with an array of activities for children and the child within you. Location: Various downtown locations. Contact: (312) 744-3315. INDIANA
Oct. 22-30 LAPORTE (Sat.-Sun. only) Halloween Ghost Train—Take a ride through the haunted woods aboard the Flying Dutchman Railroad. Watch out for the Mad Lumber Jack who haunts the woods. This event is appropriate for small children. Location: Hesston Steam Museum. Contact: (219) 872-5055. $.

KANSAS
Oct. 31 HIAWATHA Halloween Frolic Parade—The afternoon Kiddie Parade starts off the fun with hundreds of children in costume. The Grand Parade in the evening includes high school bands, floats, horses and Shrine units. Location: Downtown. Contact: (785) 742-7136. Free.

TEXAS
Oct. 30 HOUSTON Boo Bash for Kidz—Halloween fun includes the Haunted Hallway Spook House, magic, puppet shows, games, and entertainment. Location: Traders Village. Contact: (281) 890-5500.
