CALIFORNIA
Nov. 23-27 SAN DIEGO San Diego Thanksgiving Dixieland Jazz Festival—The festival bands represent a wide variety of traditional jazz, Dixieland and swing styles. Location: Town and Country Resort Hotel. Contact: (619) 297-5277. $.

ILLINOIS
Nov. 24 CHICAGO (AAA GEM event) McDonald's Thanksgiving Parade—Giant helium balloons, floats, award-winning marching bands, equestrian units, performance groups, and local and national celebrities combine to make this a fitting beginning to the holiday season. Location: State Street from Congress Parkway to Randolph Street. Contact: (312) 781-5681. Free.

MAINE
Nov. 25-26 BREWER Thanksgiving Arts and Crafts Show—Some 125 Maine artisans offer their handcrafted, locally made products. There is a free gift giveaway every hour. Location: Brewer Auditorium. Contact: (207) 621-2818. $.

MICHIGAN
Nov. 24 DETROIT America's Thanksgiving Parade—Detroit's Woodward Avenue is magical during a holiday tradition that dates to 1924. The Turkey Trot 10K and the Stuffing Strut 5K races run along the parade route. Location: Downtown. Contact: (313) 923-7400.

NEW JERSEY
Nov. 26 TRENTON Thanksgiving Parade—Some 60 organizations participate in this parade, including floats, marching bands, a pipe band, dance, step and drill teams, and the float bringing Santa Claus to town. Location: From the State House building to City Hall. Contact: (609) 815-2167. Free.

NEW YORK
Nov. 24 NEW YORK (AAA GEM event) Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade—Marching bands, celebrity-laden floats, huge helium-filled balloons, the Rockettes and Santa Claus entertain young and old alike. Location: Starts at Central Park W and 77th Street. Contact: (212) 494-4495. Free.

Nov. 25-27 TARRYTOWN Thanksgiving Weekend—Costumed guides present themed tours focused on historic Christmas traditions. The house is decorated for the holidays and hands-on workshops for the children add to the festivities. Location: Washington Irving's Sunnyside. Contact: (914) 591-8763. $.

PENNSYLVANIA
Nov. 24 PHILADELPHIA Philadelphia Thanksgiving Day Parade—Dating to 1920, the Philadelphia Thanksgiving Day Parade is believed to be the nation's oldest. Each year it announces the arrival of the holiday season with beautiful floats, marching bands, musical guests, dance teams and ample amounts of cheer. Location: Downtown. Contact: (215) 581-4502. SOUTH DAKOTA
Nov. 26-27 RAPID CITY Country Fair Thanksgiving Show—Enjoy some 200 vendors booths of handmade crafts, art and commercial products including home decor and gifts, and door prizes. Location: Rushmore Plaza Civic Center. Contact: (605) 343-8783. Donation.

TEXAS
Nov. 24 HOUSTON Thanksgiving Day Parade—Houston's Thanksgiving Day Parade is comprised of some 3,000 participants and includes floats, giant balloons, marching bands and drill teams. Festivities conclude with the lighting of some 80 Christmas trees in the city's Uptown section. Location: Downtown. Contact: (713) 654-8808.

VERMONT
Nov. 25-27 WOODSTOCK Thanksgiving Weekend—Visit with costumed guides as they prepare a bountiful 19th-century Thanksgiving meal. Also, take part in activities and programs for every age in the parlor of the 1890 farmhouse, and enjoy a homemade treat and a horse-drawn wagon ride. Location: Billings Farm and Museum. WASHINGTON
Nov. 25-27 PROSSER Thanksgiving in Wine Country—Valley wineries usher in the holiday season with specially prepared foods to match their wines. Location: Various Yakima Valley wineries. Contact: (509) 786-3177.
