Best Lobster Rolls in Maine and New Hampshire

Dockside in New England
Finding the "best" lobster roll in Maine (or coastal New England) requires a bit of an explanation of my definition.

First, let me share my criteria for the “perfect lobster roll.” Obviously, fresh lobster is key. It’s still a surprise when frozen lobster is used in New England.

Next, I prefer a grilled, not toasted, split-top hotdog roll. A tiny bit of shredded lettuce is acceptable with the fresh cold lobster pieces (averaging the amount of one shucked lobster) and garnished with a dollop of mayonaise.

There are a few variations. Some like to mix the mayo with celery salt and toss it with the lobster. Another yummy and rich-tasting alternative is adding tomalley, or lobster paste, in the mayo mixture.

Now for my top 10 places to find the best lobster roll in Maine and New Hampshire (the list is ordered geographically, from Southern to Northern locations):

1. Petey’s Summertime Seafood & Bar in Rye, N.H.

2. The Beach Plum in Portsmouth, N.H.

3. Robert’s Maine Grill in Kittery, Maine

4. Fisherman’s Catch in Wells, Maine

5. Mabel’s Lobster Claw in Kennebunk, Maine

6. Spurwink Country Kitchen in Scarborough, Maine

7. Bayley’s Seafood Restaurant in Scarborough, Maine

8. Two Lights Lobster Shack Restaurant in Cape Elizabeth, Maine

9. Harraseeket Lunch and Lobster Co. in South Freeport, Maine

10. Cook’s Lobster House (for lunch) in Bailey Island, Maine

Where have you eaten the best lobster rolls?

I suggest visiting Reds, Route 1, Wiscasset - should've been at the top of the list!

Reds on top, yes.
Cooks with lobster dinners @ $40 to $50. Average price for baked stuffed $25.00. Not a place for locals. And lobster men getting $3.00 to $4.00 per lb. That takes the buy local out of buy local. Greedy Greedy.
A real tourist trap.
