Tailgating in Iowa City
Tailgating has two definitions according to Wikipedia. One involves driving too closely behind another vehicle, which as a professional driver and a AAA employee, I do not condone.
The other is a social event that takes place around the tailgate of a vehicle and “involves consuming alcoholic beverages and grilling food.” While correct, this simple definition lacks the tradition, the spirit and the overall sense of camaraderie that tailgating brings to fellow sports fans.
In the world of Big Ten football, no fan base, in my opinion, does it better than those in Iowa City. Yes Hawkeye fans, I’m talking about you!
Kinnick Stadium is one of the toughest places for opposing teams to play. Some might attribute this to the stadium design and others to the visiting teams’ pink locker room. I, however, like to say it is all because we tailgate hard!
The sea of fans wearing black and gold inside Kinnick Stadium is deafening, thunderous and very intimidating. I love college football. I love my Hawkeyes. I love tailgating, and I love
Iowa City!

While attending a University of Iowa football game is my No. 1 reason for visiting Iowa City, the great restaurants are a close second. My favorite options before or after a game or anytime while visiting the city are:
Pizza:
Wig and Pen Pizza Pub—It’s the home of the Union Jack pizza, and the flying tomato style is my all-time favorite! Couple that with a side of their signature onion rings and an ice-cold beer, and my mouth waters just thinking about it.
Burger:
Hamburg Inn No. 2 Inc – The bleu cheese burger with a side of fries is my usual when visiting. If you’re really hungry order a booyah (double the beef) and/or deluxe it (add lettuce and tomato). It’s so good that presidents eat here. (No joke, the restaurant has been visited by the likes of Reagan, Clinton and others).
Breakfast:
Lou Henri – This restaurant has great coffee, great food and a laidback atmosphere with a location close to the University of Iowa campus. The chorizo breakfast burrito or the Eggs Jackson are my two favorite dishes there.
Sunday Brunch:
Iowa River Power Restaurant – It’s actually located in Coralville, located just outside of Iowa City, but it’s still very noteworthy. The restaurant is right on the river with great views and décor, and a unique atmosphere. But the best reason to go there is for the Sunday brunch spread that’s second to none!
Fine Dining:
Linn Street Café – This café offers an excellent wine selection, lobster bisque, duck tacos and stuffed Iowa pork tenderloin.
So many things and so little time – I guess that’s why I come back so frequently! If you visit Iowa City, I hope you get a chance to enjoy them — I know I sure do!
