Travel safety and information
Here’s a sampling of recent travel safety questions our readers have asked through our blog Q&A.
We are planning a trip to Ireland in October. Is it a good idea to register with the U.S. State Department through their Smart Traveler Enrollment Program? Is that a secure way to put our info on record in case of an emergency?
A: Whenever traveling internationally it is a good idea to know your destination. Visit
http://www.travel.state.gov/ (State Department) for a Consular Information Sheet that provides invaluable information on your destination about a variety of topics including safety and security.
The Smart Traveler Enrollment Program (STEP) is a free service provided by the U.S. Government to U.S. citizens who are traveling to, or living in, a foreign country. By enrolling and providing your contact information, it is possible for the Department of State to contact you in an emergency. For more information on the STEP program or to enroll visit:

I am planning a trip to South Padre Island soon, and am wondering if this "border town" is experiencing any of the problems associated with the Mexican side. Also, is it still safe to travel by bus to Matamoras?

A: While South Padre Island is a relatively safe and a popular Spring Break destination it is important to remember that a vacation is not a vacation from personal safety. Be aware of your surroundings, stay with your travel party, do not share your itinerary or hotel information with anyone and take precautions.
For travel safety information, we recommend looking at the U.S. Department of State’s website. On Feb. 8, 2012, the Department of State issued an updated travel warning informing U.S. citizens traveling to and living in Mexico about the security situation in Mexico. What is the regulation for medications on flights within the states?

A: For up-to-date information about travel safety and medications, please visit the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) website:
Travelers with Disabilities and Medical Conditions. According to the site: “All medications in any form or type (for instance, pills, injectables, or homeopathic) and associated supplies (syringes, Sharps disposal container, pre-loaded syringes, jet injectors, pens, infusers, etc.) are allowed through the security checkpoint once they have been screened.”
